Prom night is a special rite of passage for American high school students — with its origins going back to the 19th century. The first proms embraced a simpler outlook, with universities initially holding the dances to celebrate graduation. Eventually, the prom tradition migrated to high schools where festivities took place in the gym.
The flush economy of the 1950s encouraged proms to become more formal, moving the event outside of school grounds to fancier venues — including the White House, where the daughter of President Ford hosted her senior prom in 1975.
Proms have continued to evolve since then, allowing students to insert more personalization and creativity into their dance parties. “At Atlantis Banquets & Events, we can enact any prom theme you wish,” said Joan LaRosa, catering manager. “We offer two distinct, large banquet spaces to give the students a night to remember.”
How to Plan the Perfect Long Island Prom Checklist
When planning a prom on Long Island, there are a few key considerations before choosing the venue. These include:
- Costs – What is your budget? Is the space within the expense you envision?
- Capacity – How many guests do you expect?
- Ambience – What experience do you want from the venue?
- Location – Is the event space accessible to all students?
- Outdoor space availability – Do you want access to the outside for photographs or part of the event?
- Catering Options – What kind of foods do you want? Do you envision a sit-down dinner or a buffet?
- Parking – Will prom guests be bussed to the event, take limos or their own cars?

The Sea Star Ballroom offers a waterfront view and an elegant 5,310 square-foot space that can hold up to 320 prom guests — a perfect venue size for most high schools. Students will enjoy the picturesque scenery of the neighboring marina and the Peconic River as well as the large dance floor, which offers plenty of space for any crowd size.
The Coliseum Room, which is located within the Long Island Aquarium, provides the perfect vehicle for any type of “Under the Sea” theme, with walls constructed partially from aquatic tanks that give partygoers access to a colorful (and Instagram-worthy) ocean habitat. The space is 4,600-square foot and hosts up to 270 students.
The four-hour prom package begins with passed appetizers, featuring favorites like pizza bagels, miniature hot dogs and mozzarella sticks. A delicious dinner is served at specialty stations scattered through the venue so the party never stops — guests can enjoy festive foods like tacos, sliders and pasta as they dance throughout the night. The evening ends as all proms should, with an ice cream sundae bar and cake.
